starting places, or, the sound of things that are too big and too old
summer/fall 2009
Instructions, Part One: Teufelsberg, Berlin, Germany
- While walking up the concrete steps to the top tower at Teufelsberg, first of all just be where you are. As you climb the steps, record the sound of your feet. Walk at a pace that is comfortable and step naturally, hesitating where you need to hesitate and pausing where you need to pause. You don’t need to be alone. Breathe but don’t speak.
- Record the transition sounds from the steps into the top dome.
- Once you are in the top dome, you can pause the recorder to rearrange.
- Sit or stand on the platform in the middle. Make “shhhh” sounds, for as long as an exhale, consecutively for 5 minutes. The shhhh sounds can vary a bit in tone, from the type of sound you would make to console someone, to the kind of sound you would make to sush a nuisance when trying to concentrate.
- After 5 minutes, stop recording. I am sure you will feel like making other kinds of noises and you should.
Instructions, Part Two: Squantum Point Park, Quincy, Massachusetts
- While approaching the beach at Squantum Point Park, first of all just be where you are. As you walk across the rocks, record the sound of your feet. Walk at a pace that is comfortable and step naturally, hesitating where you need to hesitate and pausing where you need to pause. You don’t need to be alone. Breathe but don’t speak.
- Get as close to the water as possible. Record the transition sounds as you reach the water’s edge.
- Once you are standing over the water, you can pause the recorder to rearrange.
- Look out over the water.
